2009 Alabama Crimson Tide Soccer Preview
The Alabama Crimson Tide had somewhat of an enigmatic season in 2010. Indeed, it could be viewed simultaneously as an incredibly even season in the sense that the team managed a 9-9-2 record overall to finish the season, and yet, could also be viewed as being incredibly uneven in the sense that the team managed to look both tremendously good as well as tremendously bad at given times, depending on their opponent.
Now, in fairness to the Crimson Tide, their worst losses did come to some of the best teams in the country, including a 7-1 loss to #1 ranked USC, a 7-0 loss to #19 LSU, and a 6-1 loss to # 10 Florida. The team also had moments at which it looked exceptionally good, including a 5-0 win over Chattanooga, and a big 3-1 win over Arkansas. However, generally speaking, the season was one that was primarily characterized by unfulfilled promise, and is one that hopefully can be used as a stepping stone for the program.
The Crimson Tide's 2008 offensive scoring theme seemed to be "balance". No player scored more than 17 total points on the season. However the team did manage to have four players in double digits for scoring, which is a number higher than many of its SEC counterparts. Kailey Corkin was the team leader in scoring with 17 points (seven goals). Jessica Deegan followed with 12 points, and Victoria Frederick and Brooke Rogers each had 10. The Crimson Tide were led defensively by goaltender Kara Gundmens, who had a 1.57 goals per game average.
The Alabama Crimson Tide soccer program kicked off its inaugural season back in 1986, and the team was led b y head coach Janko Emedi. The program competed in organized soccer for 3 seasons worth of non-conference play at varying levels of competitiveness, initially struggling to a 2-9 record before a rapid ascent to the record of 9-4-1 in 1987, the program's 2nd season, before settling at .500 in its 3rd season
The Alabama soccer program then went on hiatus until 1994 when it returned as part of the SEC. The inaugural season for the Alabama soccer program as a member of the SEC was a successful one finishing at a 13-5-1 record, 2-1-1 in the SEC conference. Highlights of that inaugural season included wins over Arkansas and Kentucky, and two epic matches vs. Auburn.
The Alabama soccer program has been led ever since by head coach Don Staley. Stately has led the Alabama crimson tide soccer team 28 successful run in the southeastern conference. During his tenure as head coach the Alabama women's soccer program, Coach Stanley and has led the Crimson Tide to 3 SEC Southern division championships, in 1995, 1997 and 1998.
