2012 NCAA Football Highlights So Far
By Ryan Desort
One reason why so many people love college football is because of all the great storylines that emerge throughout the season. The 2012 college football season has not disappointed on this front as the first six weeks of the season have provided fans with a lot of drama. With too many highlights to mention in this article, here is a closer look at some of the more compelling stories around college football this season.
Alabama’s Continued Dominance
The Alabama Crimson Tide showed they were the best team in college football last season when they dominated the LSU Tigers in the championship game. During that game, LSU was unable to move the ball past the fifty yard line, providing another example of how dominant Alabama’s defense was. Once the Crimson Tide lost a large number of their defensive starters to the NFL, many analysts did not know what to expect this season for Alabama.
Fast forward six weeks into the season and head coach Nick Saban appears to have another dominant defense in Tuscaloosa and seems to be zeroing in on another national championship run. Alabama has destroyed every team they have faced, allowing just 7.6 points per game. The lowest point total the Crimson Tide have scored in a game was last week against Ole Miss where the team may have been looking ahead to their game against Missouri. If Alabama can escape Baton Rouge with a victory on November 3rd, they will be on the fast track to play for another national championship in January.
West Virginia’s Offense
Many college football fans were excited about West Virginia’s move to the Big 12 as it added another exciting team to that conference. Like the rest of the Big 12 the Mountaineers can seemingly score points at will on their opponents. West Virginia hung 70 points on Baylor two weeks ago and followed that up with a 48 point effort in Austin against the Texas Longhorns.
Quarterback Geno Smith has been a big reason why the Mountaineer’s offense has been so potent this season. Through five games, Smith as thrown for 1,996 yards, 24 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Those numbers have Smith as the Heisman trophy frontrunner. While the defense has been lacking for West Virginia this season, their offense is more than capable of outscoring anybody in the country.
Resurgence of Notre Dame
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have been waiting a long time to be taken seriously again on the national stage, and this season might be the year when they finally are considered relevant again. Notre Dame is off to its best start since 2002 and will look to move to 6-0 this weekend when they host Stanford. While it is not extremely surprising that Notre Dame is 5-0 on the season, it is a bit surprising that they have done it with a first-year, sophomore quarterback.
Everett Golson has been tremendous for the Fighting Irish and continues to get better each week. While he may not put up gaudy numbers like Geno Smith or some of the other big name quarterbacks around the country, Golson has proven he can lead his team to victory by taking care of the football and using his athleticism to make plays. The Fighting Irish faithful have to feel good about the status of their program moving forward knowing he will be around for two more years.
