2012 Mississippi State Bulldogs Football Preview

2011 SEC Record: 2-6 (6th SEC West) – Overall 7-6

Returning starters: 5 offense, 7 defense, 1 special teams

The Good: The Bulldogs now have a true pocket passer in Tyler Russell, who has waited his chance to show what the former Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year can do. He has weapons on the outside in senior WR’s Arceto Clark, Chris Smith and Chad Bumphis. By the way, does it seem like Chad Bumphis was a Bulldog when Rocky Felker was the coach? Oh wait, make that Emory Bellard…

The Bad: The offensive line will be a question and they had better step up since you have to run the ball in the SEC, as well as give Tyler time to throw.

The Ugly: Good thing that Ole Miss is in the SEC West, since that is the only team the Bulldogs have beaten in the West since Dan Mullen has taken over. That record better change, and in a hurry or, as Judge Smails once said, “We’ll be looking for a new greens keeper, is that clear?”

The Schedule: The Dogs do not have to travel far from home in the first half of the season as they only have two road games, Troy and Kentucky away from Scott Field. Then things get tough starting on October 27th as a trip to Tuscaloosa and then Baton Rouge two weeks later. If they can hold serve at home, they might have a chance at a great season.

What will happen: With a new QB and experienced WR’s, the Bulldogs will put up some points, but the offensive line has to play to their potential. As usual, the defense is good and has the ability to shut down almost every team they play. However, the Maroon have the problem of being in the same division with the big boys, and they are not ready for prime time. Mullen better show improvement this year, and since they do not have to worry about losing to Ole Miss, expectations have now switched from winning the state championship, to beating teams they are not expected to defeat.

Bowl Game: This team needs a direction, and it will get it in the BBVA Compass Bowl.

2012 Prediction: 6th in the SEC West.
