Tennessee Volunteers Volleyball can be justly proud of their heritage. The Volleyball Lady Vols have been to the NCAA Tournament eight times along with a number of other post-season tournaments. Tennessee Volleyball's breakout year was 2005 when they finished with an astounding 32-3 record and were able to advance to the NCAA Tournament semi-finals for the first time in twenty years. That same year, they were able to win the SEC Tournament. [Florida still took the regular season title.] In their 11th season under head coach Rob Patrick, the Lady Vols are hoping to continue to impact college volleyball on the national stage and repeat their stellar 2005 season.

Although University of Tennessee Volleyball team looked strong at beginning of 2007, they ended up with a disappointing season. In fact they failed to be selected for the 2007 NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
However, 2008 was just the opposite as the Lady Vols started slow, but finished strong. They ended up with an NCAA Tourny bid, losing in a close match to Clemson in the first round.
The Lady Vols returned 10 letter winners, including five starters from a squad that finished 11-18 overall and 6-14 in Southeastern Conference action last year. Nikki Fowler, 2007 SEC Freshman of the Year will lead the team. Nikki posted team highs in a number of statistical categories during her rookie season, including kills and total attacks, with 370 and 1,081, respectively. Junior Chloe Goldman will also play a huge role for the Big Orange in 2008 after posting the most impressive defensive year in school history last season.
Tennessee volleyball's 2008 recruiting class was ranked as the 13th-best group of incoming players in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com. The talented class is composed of four incoming freshmen and a junior college transfer.
Sophomore Kylie Marshall, an outside hitter on the Lady Vols volleyball team, has been selected to represent the University of Tennessee at the 2008 NCAA National Student-Athlete Development Conference in Orlando, Fla., from May 27-29. Also nominated from UT were Zsófia Zubor (women's tennis), Chris Kane (men's cross-country) and Josh Briscoe (football).
Head Coach Rob Patrick is very excited to have recruited such a high level of talent that and looks forward to a bright future for Tennessee Volunteers Volleyball. Just, maybe not this year.
Last Year's Discussion: Tennessee Volunteers Volleyball had a good run in 2006, finishing the season with a 19-12 record. UT was third in the SEC East and made it to the NCAA Tournament for the third consecutive year. Although they lost to Duke in the first round, the ladies of University of Tennessee Volleyball were able to prove that 2005 was not a fluke and that they belonged on college volleyball's national stage.
The team, which consists of two freshmen and twelve letter-winners, is looking to make its fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. The Lady Vols have a mixture of talented players returning to the team this year. Junior Mindy Flynn broke out as a star last August in the Comcast Lady Vol Classic, where she earned twenty-five kills and was named MVP in the three day event. Flynn went on to be a leader in both kills and blocks last year and is expected to make an impact for the Vols in 2007.

Yiliya Stoyanova, who is a two-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-American, will return to the team this season after nursing a knee injury last year. Also, rising sophomore Leah Hinkey is expected to play big after making important contributions in kills and blocks during her freshman year.
UT Volleyball has been busy in the pre-season after starting practices in early August. Coach Patrick was chosen as one of the coaches for the USA/BIP under-20 team at the European Global Challenge, and he took his team to play in Croatia. Patrick's own players, Flynn and Hinkey, were also a part of the squad who practiced in Pordenone, Italy alongside the USA Junior A2 team.
Tennessee will see some changes this year when the season begins with new assistant coach Katie Noble, who will be replacing Cindy Young who left last March to pursue other opportunities. Young, who once played for Robert Morris, is joining the Vols after two years at Southern Illinois as an assistant.
Prediction: Tennessee Volunteers Volleyball looks strong for 2007. They are ranked in the top 30 nationally in pre-season polls. They won't challenge Florida, but we think they will edge out Kentucky for 2d in the SEC East. They'll go to the NCAA tournament and make it at least to the second round. Should be a good year for Tennessee Volleyball fans.
