UPDATE: Congrats to Tim Tebow -- winner of the 2007
Heisman Trophy. Tebow beat out Darren McFadden who finished 2d for the 2d year
in a row. Both players have also been named First Team All-American's.
Here's the point totals: 1. Tim Tebow 1,957
2. Darren McFadden 1,703
3. Colt Brennan 632
4. Chase Daniel 425
5. Dennis Dixon 178
6. Pat White 150
7. Matt Ryan 63
8. Kevin Smith 55
9. Glenn Dorsey 30
10. Chris Long 17
Can't resist noting that the SEC leads, not only with the top 2 vote-getters, but also Glenn Dorsey at #9, making the Southeastern Conference the only conference with three players in the Heisman 2007 top 10.
Original story follows:
The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner will be announced at the Heisman Trophy Dinner
in New York on Monday, December 10, 2007. The leading candidates are:
This is probably one of the most wide open Heisman races in history. The fact that a sophomore (Tim Tebow) is a leading contender shows just how open it is.
The reason it is so open probably reflects how wide open the college football season has been. No team from a major conference was able to go undefeated. In fact, most of the leading contenders play on teams that lost 3 games. That's rare.
If either Florida or Arkansas had won the SEC or even their division in the SEC, Tebow or McFadden would be a sure bet.
Neither did, thus the race is wide open.
We do think it will be one of the two SEC stars.
The case for Tim Tebow is his amazing NCAA record of 51 touchdowns (29
passing; 22 rushing). He is the first player in NCAA history to have over 20
running and 20 passing touchdowns -- in one season. His 22 rushing touchdowns
is the most rushing TD's by any SEC football player, ever. His 3,970 total
yards is an all-time Florida Gator record. And, we still have the bowl game to
go. Before the season, some doubted his passing accuracy. Forget that. He's
also second in the NCAA this year in passing efficiency. BUT, he's only a
sophomore. No sophomore has ever won the Heisman Trophy. We think that will
just be one more record Tim Tebow breaks.
The case for Darren McFadden is that he came in second in the heisman voting last year and this year he has gained more yards than last year (1725). That broke his own record for most yards ever by a Razorback running back (and that's in only 12 games). Also, he tied the single game SEC rushing record with 323 yards against South Carolina and had over 200 yards and 3 TD's in the upset of LSU.
Colt Brennan leads undefeated Hawaii and has broken 24 NCAA records.
Kevin Smith leads the nation in rushing with 2448 yards.
Chase Daniel nearly led perennial underdog, Missouri, to the BCS Championship game, before losing to Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game.
So, who will win?
The betting here is on Tebow. He has had an amazing year and is responsible
for more than half of Florida's offense. And he has a superstar sort of aura
as well. Everyone likes Tim Tebow. Look for him on Wheaties boxes for years to
come.
And, expect to hear Saturday night that Tim Tebow is the winner of the 2007
Heisman Trophy.
By the way, two other former Heisman winners with SEC connections will be
honored this year as well.
First, Herschel Walker, our pick as the
Best All-Time NCAA College Football Player, will be honored on the 25th
anniversary of his Heisman award (1982).
Second, Charles Woodson will be recognized on the 10th anniversary of his
Heisman Trophy (1997). Connection to the SEC? Easy. Woodson beat out
Tennessee's Peyton Manning that year in one of the closest and most
controversial Heisman balloting ever. Of course, Manning is the
Best
All-Time SEC Quarterback. That controversial Heisman vote stoked the fires
of the eternal
